A nest of Vespa velutina built on an overhead pedestrian bridge in a suburban district in Hong Kong's New Territories. This nest sprung up some time in October, well past the usual nest-founding season, so I believe it was the result of a nest being destroyed and the survivors (including the old queen) starting this new nest nearby. They picked the wrong spot - this nest was spotted by someone who informed me of the location, but not before informing government authorities. The nest never had a happy ending. I returned with protective gear ready to relocate the nest, but the government pest control contractors beat me to it and the nest was destroyed. The colony was much bigger than apparent from such a tiny nest - I counted 86 dead wasps on the floor, including the old queen.
