An exceptionally large nest of Polistes olivaceus built under the roof of an abandoned village house in Sai Kung, New Territories, Hong Kong. The nest was nearly 33cm (13 inches) long and home to nearly 400 wasps at one time. Most nests of this species average 15cm (6 inches) and are home to less than 200 wasps. The nest was quite fearsome to look at, considering the alert and aggressive nature of this species, but by the time I took this video males made up quite a large part of the population in this nest.
