An exceptionally large underground colony of Vespa tropica in Hong Kong. The wasps are busy excavating earth to enlarge the cavity; they carry the compacted pellets of soil and drop them a short distance from the entrance. This is quite rare for this species, although the giant hornets Vespa mandarinia and Vespa soror do it regularly. Given the vast amount of soil that has already been excavated, the nest must be a good size, and the number of wasps going in and out is also unusually big for a colony in this region.
